History of Okhmatdyt

The history of Okhmatdyt began in 1894 — with the opening of the Kyiv free hospital for black workers and poor people with the money of patron Mykola Tereshchenko. Already after the Bolsheviks came to power in 1921, the hospital was repurposed as a children’s hospital.

In the spring of 1929, the Institute for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood was created in Kyiv, with the activities of which the hospital was closely connected in the following years. In another five years, “Okhmatdit” was merged with the Institute of Adolescent Health Care. And after the Second World War, polyclinic No. 11 was added to the hospital, after which it was named the United Hospital of the Okhmatdyt Institute of Maternity and Childhood Protection.

The construction of new buildings of the hospital began in 2011, and in December 2017, the first stage of the new building of “Okhmatdyt” was opened: a medical complex with an area of more than 26 thousand square meters with magnetic resonance imaging machines and other equipment.

The construction of the new buildings was completed in July 2020 — the President of Ukraine took part in the opening ceremony of the second phase. The number of beds in the hospital increased from 620 to 720, and the number of operating rooms – from six to 12. The laboratory was equipped with more modern equipment.

The head of the bone marrow transplantation department, Oleksandr Lysytsia, said that as a result of the attack on July 8, 2024, the new building, opened in 2020, was also damaged.

After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, some of the patients of “Okhmatdyt” were evacuated to safer regions of the country and abroad. But the hospital itself continued to work and began to receive the wounded.

According to the general director of “Okhmatdyt” Volodymyr Zhovnir, in the first weeks of the full-scale war, the hospital was fired upon several times with small arms, and on March 5, 2022, a rocket exploded over the territory of the complex during the work of the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces. No one was hurt that day.

On March 16, 2022, a rocket hit the building next to the hospital. Its debris was found on the balcony in the neonatal surgery department and in the area around the facility, in the pediatric department, windows were blown out by the blast wave, and in the neurology department, the ceiling was damaged. No one was hurt.

At the end of March 2022, the anonymous street artist Banksy gave “Okhmatdyt” more than 100,000 dollars received from the sale of his work, which depicts two soldiers painting the Pacific.
